Welcome to Our Web Page

When this web page began more than twenty years ago, it described most of the activities of our whole family. Now that most of our children have flown the coop, it is mostly about what Ann and I (Dave) have been up to. I update it most weekends. We save all the messages over the past year in an Archive along with links to what we were doing ten and twenty years ago.

You can click on the pictures above to get a bit more information about each of us.

Dave and Al at Sweet Ride with Dave's new bike

Dave and Al, co-owner of Sweet Ride Cycling, with Dave's new bike

Yesterday I finally got my 70th birthday present from Ann: a new Specialized e-bike. We drove down to Sweet Ride Cycling in Mahone Bay, tried it out by riding around a hilly loop through town, then took the plunge and bought it. For the time being, I expect to use it only on the hilliest rides but I foresee using it more and more in the next few years.

Biking has reasserted itself as our main form of exercise over the past couple of weeks. We have been skating a couple of times and we have walked with the Roadents in Shubie Park a couple of times but I have been biking nine times; skiing is definitely done for the season. Most of the time we have ridden a loop through Dartmouth, Cole Harbour, and out to Montague Gold Mines: about 33–35 kms depending on which of several minor variations we take. Today, for a change, while Ann was at church, I joined Norm, Pauline, Fred, Lynn and Phyllis on a ride from the Coke Plant in Beechville to Five Islands Lake. We started out on the BLT trail but then switched to the road when it became too muddy. On the way back we stopped at D & Jo's Market in Timberlea for coffee and treats.

Yesterday I got up early to watch the partial solar eclipse from the parking lot at Kent Building Supplies in Dartmouth Crossing. It was already nearing its maximum coverage — about 84% — as it rose above the horizon. The sky was almost completely overcast except for a strip on the horizon in the east. That allowed for great viewing for about 25 minutes until the sun rose into the clouds.

On Thursday, Ann and I went to see Symphony Nova Scotia play a couple of guitar concertos featuring Daniel Bolshoy. One was the famous one by Rodrigo and the other was a very recent one by Chris Brubeck, the son of Dave Brubeck. I enjoyed them but thought that Bolshoy was struggling a bit; he certainly had difficulty keeping his G string in tune. I suspect he has had better nights.

Ann has continued to volunteer at the food bank and doing taxes at various libraries around town. She also played Mahjong with the usual group on Tuesday and went to see Fat Juliet, a modern take on Romeo and Juliet, with Kim and Glen last Saturday.
